While the Commission is universal to every believer, the Mission is personal. God has uniquely gifted, called, and prepared every believer for specific works of service within the Body of Christ. You are not a spare part. Your gifts, your calling, and your place in the body are designed by God. Your mission is to discover what He has given you and to deploy those gifts faithfully for His glory and the building up of His Church.
4.1 Every Believer Is Gifted
There is no Christian without a gift. Paul names the principle plainly — God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable (Romans 11:29) — and in the very next chapter applies it directly to the varied gifts given to each believer in the body (Romans 12:3-8). The same Spirit who now indwells every believer (see Chapter 1) is the One who distributes the gifts to each member of the body for the common good, and we are stewards of what we have received.

4.2 The Diversity of Gifts
God has given a wide variety of gifts to His people. No single believer has them all, and no single gift defines the whole body. The lists below are representative — the Spirit is not limited to them — but they show the breadth of how God equips His people.
Romans 12:6-8 — Motivational Gifts
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (Romans 12:6-8)
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 — Manifestation Gifts of the Spirit
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He distributes them to each one, just as He determines.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)

“And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.” (1 Corinthians 12:28)

“So Christ Himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.” (Ephesians 4:11)
4.3 Every Believer Has a Place in the Body
The Church is not an organisation — it is an organism, a living body. Every member is essential. There are no unimportant parts and no spectators.
“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:4-5)
“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body — whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.” (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
“But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.” (1 Corinthians 12:18)
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27)
4.4 Every Believer Has a Calling
God has prepared in advance specific good works for each of us to walk in. Your life is not random. It is a divine assignment from a sovereign God.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made… Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:13-16)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28-30)
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life — not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace.” (2 Timothy 1:9)
4.5 Discovering and Deploying Your Mission
Three things shape your personal mission in the Body of Christ:
- Your Gifts — the spiritual abilities, natural talents, experiences, and resources God has given you to fulfil your calling.
- Your Calling — the specific assignment God has prepared for you, confirmed through inner conviction, the counsel of trusted leaders, and the doors God opens.
- Your Values — the fruit of the Holy Spirit and Christlike character: waiting on, listening to, and accepting the direction of Jesus, the Head of the Church, so the mission glorifies God and not self.
The believer’s lifelong work is to discover, develop, and deploy these three things in faithful obedience to Christ — not for personal glory, but to equip and serve the Body, and to advance the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.
4.6 Faithfulness and Stewardship
God does not require equal results from every believer. He requires faithful stewardship of what He has entrusted to each one.
“His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”” (Matthew 25:21)
“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2)
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
“Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.” (1 Timothy 4:14)
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6)
4.7 Values — The Fruit of the Spirit
The Fruit of the Spirit completes this picture. Vision, Purpose, Commission, and Mission describe what God intends, what the Church is, what every believer is sent to do, and what each believer is personally gifted to contribute. Values describe the character in which all of it must be carried: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23) — the fruit of the Spirit.
The fruit is not a second list of gifts. The gifts are distributed — to each one a different manifestation, as the Spirit wills; the fruit is given whole to every believer, and grows in every believer who walks by the Spirit. Paul writes “the fruit of the Spirit is” — singular. The nine are one integrated character: the character of Christ Himself, formed in His people. Depending on the moment, Jesus expressed the fruit of the Spirit as the moment needed — gentleness with the bruised reed, and a whip of cords in the temple courts, from the same undivided character.
A gift exercised without the fruit profits nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1–3). Elders without the fruit are not qualified to lead, whatever their abilities. Deacons without the fruit cannot serve faithfully. The Saints’ works of ministry are only the Work of the Ministry when they are done in love. In the Strategy on a Page (Chapter 9), the Values are deliberately drawn within the Holy Spirit’s own box: the fruit is not produced by effort but by abiding — it is His character, grown in us as we walk with Him.
Later, when we start to discover our gifts we treat the Fruit of the Spirit in full alongside the eighteen gifts; the self-assessment deliberately does not score the fruit, because character is not measured by self-rating but witnessed over time by those who know us. Here it is enough to fix the order: the fruit is the soil; the gifts are the planting; the works are the harvest.
