The eighteen gifts of the Holy Spirit
What each gift is, how Scripture shows it, how to recognise it in yourself, its shadow side, the fruit that shapes it, and where it may be calling you.
Never heard of “spiritual gifts”?
The Bible teaches that God’s Spirit gives every believer particular abilities — practical, verbal and caring — given for the good of others, never for status: “to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). This field guide describes the eighteen named in Scripture in plain language: what each looks like in an ordinary life, its shadow side when it drifts, and where it serves. Two words worth knowing as you read: a dispositional gift is woven into how you are made and shows up steadily, while a manifestation gift is given by the Spirit in the moment it is needed.
Where can my gifts be used?
Not only in a church service. The Spirit’s gifts are for the whole of life — at home, among friends, in your neighbourhood, and often right where you work. They may line up with your occupation, or they may not, and either is fine. Scripture’s counsel to work — “whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10), and “whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23) — is not itself about spiritual gifts. That word in Colossians was first spoken to bondservants, yet it holds for all who work under authority today: it speaks to the ordinary, God-given dignity of working to provide for yourself and others, done wholeheartedly as unto Christ, which under Christ you are free to pursue by your own conscience and choosing.
What are biblical examples, and how can seasons of life change?
Your gifts of the Spirit may flow through your work, or run alongside it. Think of Jesus the carpenter (Mark 6:3), Paul the tentmaker (Acts 18:3), and disciples who were fishermen (Matthew 4:18) — plain, ordinary trades, and yet among such men stood the Saviour of the world, and the pastors, teachers, elders and apostles of the early church. So hold two things together: the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20) is common to us all and carried into every workplace, while your particular calling may sit within your work, outside it, or both — and it can shift from one season to the next. There is no formula. That is why regular prayer and honest discernment, within your family and your church community, matters so much — and why waiting on the Holy Spirit is essential, to hear from the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ Himself (Colossians 1:18).
