To keep our treatment of each gift consistent and thorough, we will apply a seven-step framework to each one in turn.

1. Scripture foundation

The key biblical text(s) where the gift is named, including the original Greek word and its meaning, plus any qualifiers Paul or others attach to it.

2. Biblical picture

How the gift is portrayed across scripture — the broader theological and narrative texture, including how Jesus Himself embodies it and how it connects to related themes (beatitudes, prophets, wisdom literature).

3. Characteristics of someone with this gift

The observable traits, instincts, and patterns of behaviour typical of a person gifted in this area — what it actually looks like in a human life.

4. How you might identify it in yourself

Reflective questions to help someone discern whether this gift may be operating in them, including both internal indicators (what they feel, notice, are drawn to) and external confirmation (what others observe and say).

5. Shadow sides and cautions

The counterfeits, pitfalls, and distortions the gift is prone to — how it can go wrong, burn out, or be misused, and which other gifts it needs alongside it for balance.

6. How it expresses itself in practice

Concrete examples of ministries, roles, and everyday expressions where the gift typically shows up — both in formal church contexts and in ordinary life.

7. Biblical examples

People in scripture who exemplified the gift, with Jesus Himself first where applicable, then Old Testament figures, then figures from Acts and the early church — drawing out the specific moments and patterns that illustrate the gift in action.
