The work of identifying, installing, and releasing elders and deacons is among the most consequential work a local body does. Done well, it produces leaders who can shepherd the flock through every season. Done poorly, it produces drift, division, and damage that can take a generation to repair.
The framework above is detailed because the work is serious. It is also incomplete: no framework substitutes for prayer, for the Spirit's confirmation, for the willingness to wait when the right candidate is not yet there, and for the courage to release when the season has changed. Use the framework; do not become its slave.
Above all, remember the trust given: the elders and deacons of Christ's Church are not corporate officers or program managers. They are shepherds, examples, and servants under the Chief Shepherd Himself, who will one day appear and reward those who served faithfully.
1 Peter 5:1-4
“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.”
May the Chief Shepherd grant every local body the elders and deacons it needs, in the seasons it needs them, and may every elder and deacon serve the flock under His authority, for His glory, until He comes.
