A summary of the recurring errors elderships should be alert to, drawn together from the cautions in Parts Two through Seven.
Error 1 — Suppressing the Five-Fold altogether
Many bodies have lost any operational sense that Christ gives Five-Fold ministers and that the body is to recognise and release them. The result is the corporate-template church of Document 1 (Vision, Purpose, Commission & Mission) Chapter 8 — a single Senior Pastor with audience, no functioning fivefold, the Saints reduced to consumers. Recovery is the Awakening Pathway of Part Nine.
Error 2 — Manufacturing the Five-Fold by appointment
The opposite error. The body installs titles — “Apostle X,” “Prophet Y” — without the fruit Christ has given. Titles multiply; equipping does not. The body honours people who have not been given the gifts Christ has not given them. Over time the body becomes confused about authority and ministry.
Error 3 — The self-appointed apostle
A particular form of Error 2. A Saint claims the title for themselves, often with a network or media platform around them, without the recognition of other apostolic ministers or any sending body. The biblical pattern is the reverse — the body and other apostolic ministers recognise; the Saint does not assert.
Error 4 — The unaccountable prophet
The prophet who refuses to be weighed by other prophets or by the body. 1 Corinthians 14:29 is not optional. The Spirit is not threatened by weighing; the false prophetic spirit always is.
Error 5 — The celebrity evangelist
The evangelistic gift detached from local-body accountability, the platform inflating, the personal life opaque, the message slowly drifting under the pressure of platform incentives. Many of the highest-profile failures in modern Christian ministry have followed this pattern.
Error 6 — The pastor-teacher without an eldership around him
The one-man-show church of Document 1 Chapter 8.2. A pastor bearing the weight alone, no team of elders, no peers who can challenge, no structure of accountability. The biblical model is a team of elders shepherding together.
Error 7 — The teacher outside doctrinal accountability
A teaching gift unwilling to be taught — unwilling to read other teachers, unwilling to be challenged by other elders, unwilling to update doctrine where scripture compels it. Over time the body is malformed by what is taught.
Error 8 — The Five-Fold above the body pattern
Some streams treat the Five-Fold as a tight governance hierarchy with formal offices and titles, sometimes elevated above the local eldership. This is not the New Testament pattern. The Five-Fold equips; the eldership shepherds and oversees; the body serves. The Strategy on a Page (Document 1 Chapter 9) places all three columns at the same level under Christ.
Error 9 — The Five-Fold without prayer and fasting
Recognition by management committee. The eldership decides who is or is not a Five-Fold minister based on competency assessments rather than on the Spirit’s confirmation in fasting and prayer. The result is gifts conferred by committee rather than gifts received from Christ.
Error 10 — Five-Fold ministers without sabbath, family, or limits
Each of the gifts is heavy. A Five-Fold minister who does not sabbath, who loses their marriage or children to the ministry, who suppresses their own need for community of peers, does not finish well. The eldership pastoring the Five-Fold ministers in its midst attends to their household and to their soul, not only to their output.
Error 11 — Confusing trial release with permanent recognition
The body releases a Saint into a trial ministry and then never reviews. Years later it becomes clear the fruit was not what it appeared to be — but by then the recognition is informal and removing it is costly. The recognition process must include scheduled review (Part Four Stage F).
Error 12 — Sending without resourcing
The body commissions a Saint into itinerant ministry but then leaves them to support themselves entirely, to find their own accountability, to navigate their own crises. The Acts 13 sending of Barnabas and Saul included the body’s ongoing investment — the missionaries returned and reported, the body sustained the work. The eldership must follow the sending with resourcing.
