Vision — where God is taking history
God is bringing all of history toward one end: a redeemed people in His presence, in a renewed creation, worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ together forever. That is the future. Everything else flows from that destination.
We see this Vision in the opening pages of scripture, where humanity walked with God in the cool of the day in a garden He made for them. We see it lost when sin broke the fellowship. We see it foreshadowed across the Old Testament — in tabernacle, in temple, in promise after promise of a coming King. We see it inaugurated when the Son of God came in flesh, died for sin, rose from the dead, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and poured out His Spirit. We see it advancing through the Church of Jesus Christ across every generation since. We see it consummated when He returns and makes all things new.
That is where history is going. That is the Vision under which our church stands.
Purpose — why our church exists
Our church exists to equip the saints for the works of ministry, so that the Body of Christ may be built up to maturity, and so that the Kingdom of God may advance in our locality and beyond.
That is not our wording — it is Paul’s, in Ephesians 4. Christ ascended and gave gifts to His Church (Ephesians 4:7–8). He gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers (Ephesians 4:11). And He gave them not to do the ministry for the Saints, but to equip the saints to do the ministry themselves (Ephesians 4:12). The Saints — every single Saint — are the ones who actually do the work. The leaders equip; the Saints minister; the Body is built up.
Our church exists for that pattern. Not for the building. Not for the programmes. Not for the brand. Not for the platform. For the equipping of the saints, the building up of the Body, and the advance of the Kingdom.
Commission — what every Saint is sent to do
The Lord Jesus left His Church with a clear instruction before He ascended.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." — Matthew 28:18–20
This is the Commission. It is collective — given to the Church as a whole. And it is individual — every Saint participates in it according to the gifts and calling the Spirit has given them. The teacher teaches; the evangelist proclaims; the helper helps; the giver gives; the prayer warrior prays; the merciful Saint cares; the hospitable Saint opens their home; the administrator runs what needs running. Every gift, every Saint, every contribution — together, the Commission moves forward.
No Saint is exempt. No Saint stands on the sideline. Every Saint of this body is sent.
Mission — your unique gifts and calling
The Commission is shared. The Mission is personal. Every Saint has been given particular spiritual gifts and a particular calling — a unique mission that no one else can fulfil quite the way they can.
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." — Ephesians 2:10
The works are already there, prepared by God. Your task — and ours alongside you — is to discover what He has given you, walk in it, and bear fruit. This is why we walk every Saint of this body, in their own time and at their own pace, through a personal discernment process: prayerful reflection, a self-assessment of the eighteen spiritual gifts named in the New Testament, conversation with mature Saints, and confirmation by the Eldership. You learn what He has given you. You step into it. You bear fruit.
And if you have not yet walked this journey, there is no condemnation and no pressure. The door is open. Begin when you are ready. The body walks with you.
Values — the fruit of the Spirit
The gifts of the Spirit are how we serve. The fruit of the Spirit is who we are becoming. We value the fruit above the gifts, because gifts without fruit wound the body and dishonour the Lord, but fruit without prominent gifts still builds the Kingdom every day.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." — Galatians 5:22–23
These nine qualities are our shared values, in the only meaningful sense of that word: they are what we aim to be and to become, in our marriages, our households, our work, our friendships, our service, and our worship together. We do not arrive at them by trying harder. We grow in them as we walk by the Spirit, kept in step with the Lord, the Word in our hands and prayer on our lips.
- Love — the patient, costly, self-giving love modelled by Christ.
- Joy — settled gladness in the Lord, regardless of circumstances.
- Peace — the calm of a heart resting in the finished work of Christ.
- Forbearance — patient endurance of one another in love.
- Kindness — practical goodwill in word and deed.
- Goodness — moral integrity, generosity, openhandedness.
- Faithfulness — reliability and steadfastness in commitments.
- Gentleness — strength under control, humility in dealing with others.
- Self-control — mastery of appetite and impulse for the glory of God.
