Approved and Disapproved Workers
A study in the metallurgy of Scripture — what gold, silver, wood and clay teach us about the Saint who holds the Holy Spirit with honour, and who the disapproved worker in the great house really is.
Orientation
Read in order
The two men — and who the disapproved worker really is
Hymenaeus and Philetus, what they taught, and the portrait of a disapproved worker who is inside the house, not outside it.
The two words the passage turns on
Approved and disapproved, honour and dishonour — the assayer's language Paul reaches for before he ever mentions gold.
Walking through the passage
A verse-by-verse walk through 2 Timothy 2:14–22, from the words that ruin to the flight pursued in company.
The materials — in Scripture, and measured
Gold, silver, wood and clay have been in the fire before. Then the laboratory: melting points, malleability, corrosion, conduction.
What the materials preach
What the metals actually teach: the same fire, malleability, conduction, incorruption, weight, and proven purity.
Where the analogy must not be pressed
Where the metaphor breaks: wood cannot become gold, but a man can be cleansed — the call, not a caste.
Life application, and the bridge to Part Two
Observable marks of the approved and disapproved worker, questions to weigh which one you are — then Paul's turn toward gentleness, with sources and a Scripture index.
The Restoration Conversation
This document is the warning; the Restoration Conversation is the tool that walks two people through putting a quarrel right. Each of you prepares privately first, then you work through nine short rounds and end by each saying whether it is settled — and what you write in preparation stays private to you.
The written guide is free to fill in on screen and download to Word or PDF. The guided online version — where the Platform walks the two of you through it — comes with a Family, Elder or Engaged Church membership; anyone invited to a conversation can take part on a free account.
